Object info

NGC1499, also known as the California Nebula, is a large emission nebula with a low surface brightness, which makes it difficult to observe. The nebula is most likely to be illuminated by Xi Persei (the brightest star in the image).

The nebula lies at a distance of about 1000 light years, is about 100 light years long and can be found in the constellation Perseus.

Processing

DSLRFocus was used for focussing. All separate frames were calibrated, aligned and stacked in ImagesPlus 2.8. "Dynamic Background Extraction" (DBE) was done in PixInsight. Photoshop CS2 was used for further processing - curves adjustment, levels adjustment, etc. The image was calibrated using 45 darks, 40 flats and 30 bias frames.
Above image is a "Pseudo" LRGB image. An artificial "L" component was added to the RGB image.

Comments

Not an easy target for an unmodified DSLR. Small dust patch at lower right, somehow not accounted for with flat registration.
