Object info

Our planet moves around the Sun much quicker than Mars does (780 days). Every 26 months, the Earth passes Mars on it's orbit (our orbit is closer to the Sun). When Earth passes Mars, astronomers call the event an opposition.

In August 2003, the planet Mars came closer to our planet than it had been in the past 50.000 years. At the time of taking this image, Mars was at a distance of approximately 56 million kilometers.
