Venus is the second planet from the Sun after Mercury. It is the brightest natural object in the night sky after the Moon and can cast shadows when seen from very dark areas without light pollution.
Venus is comparible in size to Earth but has a very dense atmosphere consisting mostly of carbon dioxide. Atmospheric pressure is 92 times higher on Venus than on Earth and has a mean temperature of about 460 °C
Venus is a terrestrial planet and due to its proximity to Earth has been a prime target for early exploration. It was visited by Mariner 2 in 1962, and the Russian Venera 7 probe landed on the planet in 1970.
