Noctilucent clouds, or night shining clouds are cloud-like phenomena in the upper parts (76 to 85km) of Earth’s atmosphere.
These clouds consist of ice crystals and are only visible from the ground during astronomical twilight near the summer solstice.
In order for these clouds to be visible the observer should already be in Earth’s shadow but these extremely high clouds are still in sunlight.
No confirmed records of these clouds exist before 1885.
