Sh2-284 is a large emission nebula in the constellation Monoceros.
It is also a star formation region, and at its centre is a cluster of young stars with an estimated age of only about 3 to 4 million years.
The radiation from these stars is powerful enough to ionise the hydrogen gas in the nebula’s cloud. It is this ionisation that produces its bright orange and red colours.
The nebula and cluster lies at a distance of about 15000 light years.
